Which is Bigger - SDP's $60 Billion or PAP's $60 Billion?

In his proposal "Creating Jobs and Enterprise in a New Singapore Economy - Ideas for Change" Mr Tan Jee Say wrote
The above 6 Regeneration Funds will cost a total of $60 billion to be spread out over 5 years.

and in an interview on tv, Mr Tan says that $60 billion is small change to our government which has a few hundred billion in its reserves.

Some members of the PAP reacted strongly.

Small Change
“To them, 60 billion dollars is small change,” said the DPM before rhetorically asking the audience, “Do you know how many zeros there are in 60 billion? That to the government, is not small change.”

"Tell us how you overspend the YOG budget by over S$300 million? That to us is not small change. We are waiting for your accounts."

The statements betray what the speakers value. Is $300 million overspent on things that no Singaporean commoner benefited from bigger than $60 billion reinvested into Singapore to help Singapore grow.

How Long Does It Take To Accumulate $60 Billion?
Tan also took issue with a remark by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, that it takes at least a decade to accumulate S$60 billion.

The former civil service high-flier, who spent six years in the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) , claims that from 2006 to 2008, the general government finance had recorded a surplus of S$75 billion.

"That is $15 billion more than my proposed S$60 billion fund and that took place in three years, not ten years as you thought wrongly," said Tan.

I don't know, maybe accumulating $60 billion for economic regeneration is different from accumulating $60 billion for other purposes?

I like to eat potato chips. If you take more than just one or two chips from my packet, I will be very upset because I will not have enough for myself to eat.
If I finish eating it myself, I will buy another packet.

$60 Billion vs $60 Billion - Which is Bigger?
After all the hooha about Mr Tan's $60 Billion, page 8 of  PAP's manifesto jumped out at me when I was reading it.

Invest $60 billion to double our MRT network, so as
to shorten commuting times and reduce crowding while
keeping fares affordable

How come $60 billion for economic regeneration is tantamount to raiding and is astronomical but $60 billion just to double the MRT network alone is reasonable and understandable?

  2. How can you doubt PAP's maths????? They have people from cambridge!!!! Just like how they predict it takes 50 years for another flood to occur and it just flooded yesterday at AMK! It's very accurate! 50 years have passed!

  4. Probably cause one is $60 billion from reserves in addition to government revenue to fund Tan's scheme, whereas the other one is $60 billion over many years from the normal governmental budget.
